MANAFWA

Residents of Butoto Sub County in Manafwa district have unanimously rejected the government’s relocation plan, arguing that their area is safe and has never experienced landslides or cracks.

The Prime Minister’s Office had initiated a massive registration exercise to identify people living in disaster-prone areas in Bugisu region, including Manafwa, Bududa, Namisindwa, Sironko, Bulambuli, and Mbale.

The main objective of the registration was to compensate individuals living in such areas and relocate them to safer zones or to the Bunambutye government resettlement area in Bulambuli district.

However, the residents of Butoto Sub-county, through their LCIII Chairperson, David Kutosi, have petitioned against the relocation plan, stating that their area is not prone to disasters.

Kosea Kigayi Kimono, the LCV Chairperson of Manafwa district, today Wednesday, 29th January, 2025 acknowledged receipt of the petition and noted that the district is sensitizing locals about the benefits of relocation.

He warned that those who refuse to relocate may face force, as stated by the Prime Minister Robina Nabanja during her visit to Bugisu last year after a landslide killing over 100 people at Buluganya Sub County in Bulambuli district.

Other sub counties in Manafwa district where registration exercises are taking place are Kato, Weswa, Buweswa and Bunabuzale.
