The Civil Division of the High Court, in a session presided over by Judge Douglas Karekoona Singiza today Wednesday, 19th February, 2025 has set to rule on the Dr. Kizza Besigye and Lawyer Eron Kizza case on notice before 25th February, 2025.
This will be after Eron Kiiza and Kiiza Besigye’s legal teams make and serve the required submissions that have been tasked to them to the Attorney General and an application for Judicial Review.
Veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale, had been brought to the High Court Civil Division in Kampala for the hearing of a habeas corpus application seeking their release from incarceration.
The two have been on remand since November of last year following their abduction from Nairobi, Kenya. They were subsequently charged with security-related offenses and later treachery at the General Court Martial. However, in a ruling last month, the Supreme Court halted the trial of civilians in military courts.
Meanwhile, Judge Singiza also sent Dr. Besigye back to Luzira prison because of his ill-health.
“This is an administrative order. If a prisoner is sick, I can’t continue with him, He might faint,” he ruled.
The judge directed prison authorities to return Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale to custody and adjourned the session for housekeeping matters. He also requested journalists to leave the courtroom.
