Jinja Police are searching for the driver of an ambulance (UBR 148W) who drove recklessly from Iganga to Jinja carrying a corpse and 10 mourners.
According to Michael Kananura, Public Relations Officer Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, the incident happened on Thursday 6th March, 2025 at Wanyange, along the Iganga-Jinja Highway towards Jinja City.
He says despite being stopped at Kakira checkpoint, the driver refused to comply and was later blocked at Wanyange. He abandoned the ambulance, which had 10 occupants & a deceased person on board, and fled the scene.
The occupants hired an alternative vehicle to continue their journey, while the ambulance as impounded and taken to Jinja Central Police Station. The driver will face charges once apprehended.
“This incident serves as a reminder that ambulances are meant for emergency medical transportation & should not be used to claim right of way or transport deceased individuals,” Kananura says adding that all drivers should exercise caution and respect the intended purpose of ambulances.
