Mbale City Council Enforcement team has arrested four individuals who were frustrating the relocation of Taxis to Kumi Road Market.

The four whose identities were not revealed were arrested on Wednesday, 16th April, 2025 as City Authorities officially relocated Taxis that have been operating along the streets of Kumi Road to Kumi Road Market.

According to the Town Clerk in charge Mbale Northern City Division, Frank Kisule, they arrested four individuals who were mobilizing gangs to prevent taxi drivers from entering the park and also impounded four vehicles.

“We officially handed over the park to the taxi drivers after reclaiming it from individuals who had turned it into private parking for other vehicles,”Kisule said adding that, “We impounded the vehicles and arrested four individuals who were mobilizing gangs to prevent taxi drivers from entering the park.”

Mr. Kisule further revealed that the city council plans to install security lights in the newly allocated taxi park and remove all unauthorized street operators to bring order and structure to the city.

On Monday, Mbale city with taxi drivers had a dialogue meeting at the RCC’s board room and passed resolutions: one of them is to remove lorries from Kumi road Taxi park and put back Taxis in two days.

In an exclusive interview with our reporter, Kisule confirmed that the exercise was a success and all taxis which have been operating on Kumi road have been pushed back to Kumi road Taxi Park.

However, some drivers say that the council must remove buses and tukutukus (three-wheelers) from the streets such that there is fair competition, warning that if this is not done, they will go back to the streets.

The Chairman of the Kumi Road Taxi Drivers, Muhammad Senfuma Mohammad, expressed gratitude to the council and urged fellow taxi operators to comply with the new arrangement.

“Let us all use the designated park for loading and offloading passengers. This will help us avoid clashes with city enforcement,” he said.

He also appealed to passengers to support the move. “Please understand that we are working to create order. We encourage you to board and disembark at the park, not on the streets,” he added.
