Uganda National Examinations Board, (UNEB) has confirmed that it fired two of its staff that were involved in an attempt to alter candidates’ marks.

In a statement dated 2nd May, 2025 UNEB says the Board has a zero tolerance policy to examination malpractice, particularly adulteration of marks at any stage.
In the same statement it confirms media reports that there were attempts of altering candidates’ marks by UNEB Staff.
“UNEB has instituted strong layers of security that are able to detect any form of malpractice related to altering of scores/marks of candidates. It is through such measures that the Board’s security system was able to quickly discover the attempts by two members of staff to tamper with scores of candidates,” reads the statement in part.
It says the Board re-validated scores on the scripts from the suspected centers and established that the perpetrators had not succeeded in altering any scores in the system.
It however denies reports that over 20 of its staff were involved in the alteration of marks.
“It is also not true that over 20 members of staff were implicated in the alleged malpractice. Thorough investigations did not reveal involvement of any other officers,” says UNEB.
Uneb says that as soon as the suspected malpractice was detected, the suspects were handed over to police adding that the duo confessed to the Board their attempt at altering marks and were subsequently relived off their duties.
UNEB however, declines to reveal the identities of the two staff members.
Earlier media reports indicated that the said officers have been contacted by schools since 2018 and that over 20 members of staff were implicated in the alleged malpractice, which UNEB denies saying there is no evidence.
