The Tieng Adhola Cultural Institution has been left in disbelief after a respected elder, Professor Potian Godfrey Okoth was flogged by a young girl during a burial for allegedly possessing evil spirit, locally known as Mujini that caused the death of the deceased.
The disturbing incident occurred on May 24, 2025, in Puluro village, Rubongi sub-county, where Professor Potian Godfrey Okoth, a respected elder, was assaulted during a funeral vigil at the home of Mr. Okumu Azalia.
Witnesses reported that a young girl flogged and attacked the professor, allegedly believing that he possessed a spirit known as “Mujini,” which was blamed for the death being mourned. Shockingly, the master of ceremony and others in attendance encouraged the assault, with no one intervening to stop the violence.
In response, the Tieng Adhola Cultural Institution has firmly stated that the belief in “Mujini” has no place in Padhola, warning that such superstitions can lead to dangerous consequences.
This declaration was made yesterday 29th May, 2025 during a consultative meeting held at the office of the Prime minister Tieng Adhola cultural institution chaired by Josel Richard Obbo, the prime minister (Jago) of Padhola, and attended by senior members of the Tieng Adhola cabinet, Senior Royal advisors, and Clan leaders.
Obbo condemned the attack, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable in Padhola or any civilized society.
The meeting resolved that the clan head of Amor Kagulo Adundo and his executive should collaborate with the clan head of Koyi Katandi, whose members were allegedly involved in the assault. Given that funeral vigils fall under the jurisdiction of cultural leaders, the two clans will work together to investigate the root cause of the incident and take necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The institution urged the community to reject harmful superstitions and uphold respect for elders and cultural values.
Authorities and cultural leaders are expected to take further steps to ensure justice and reinforce the importance of peaceful coexistence in Padhola.
