An internal power struggle within Uganda’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) has erupted following the controversial overturning of Jane Okurut’s election as Chairperson of the Women’s League, igniting backlash from local party leaders.

In a dramatic turn of events, Godfrey Othieno Otabong, the NRM district branch chairperson, during a press conference held at his office on Friday 6th June, 2025 rejected the directive from the party’s Electoral Commission chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, which declared Annet Nyakecho the new chairperson despite Okurut’s initial victory.

“This decision undermines the principles of natural justice,” asserted Otabong. “You cannot allow a popular and transparent victory to be unjustly overturned without allowing the victors a chance to defend their win.” He detailed that no opportunity was given to Okurut or the district party registrar to present their side before the decision was made, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.

The turmoil began with a letter from Dr. Tanga dated June 4, which asserted that Nyakecho had received 46 votes compared to Okurut’s 65.

However, Tanga’s calculations have been questioned, as he claimed the total number of voters was 80, therefore rendering Okurut’s win illegitimate. “We have resolved that it was irregular to declare the person who polled 65 votes as the winner,” Tanga stated, escalating the situation further.

Local party members voiced their outrage, particularly given Nyakecho’s previous bid for the vice chairperson role, which was dismissed by voters.

Otabong condemned Dr. Tanga’s actions, accusing him of undermining the operations of the Tororo district NRM office, even threatening its closure.

In response to the upheaval, Jane Okurut expressed her deep disappointment. “This decision does not reflect the will of the people of Tororo County,” she said.

However, she remains resolute and grateful to her supporters: “I thank the people of Tororo County for entrusting me with leadership.
