Honourable Betty Amongi Ongom, the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development of Uganda, has today, 11th June, 2025 delivered a powerful statement on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at the 113th Session of the International Labour Conference. Her address highlighted the pressing need for a collaborative approach to address labor rights, job creation, and social justice around the globe.
In her speech, Hon. Amongi brought attention to the dire conditions faced by migrant workers, calling for cooperation among nations to ensure the dignity and rights of all individuals in the workforce. She emphasized that economic prosperity must not come at the expense of human life and dignity, particularly in the context of forced labor.
“Our commitment to social justice is unwavering,” said Hon. Amongi. “We are dedicated to ensuring that every worker has access to decent work conditions and a fair wage. The rights of every individual must be respected, regardless of where they come from.”
Hon. Amongi welcomed the engagement with the Global Coalition for Social Justice, which provides a platform for cooperation, leveraging a century of ILO experience to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
To mark this significant moment, she called upon ILO constituents to come together in support of a comprehensive agenda that puts jobs, rights, and growth at the forefront of global development.
“The pathway to equality and justice requires solidarity, and it is time for all of us to come together to create a better future for workers everywhere,” concluded Hon. Amongi.
