The Uganda Professional Science Teachers’ Union (UPSTU) successfully hosted its inaugural Science Innovation Projects Competition 2025 for the Eastern Region.

Held at Mbale Secondary School on Saturday, July 5th, 2025, the event brought together students from across the region, all passionately showcasing their groundbreaking scientific projects.

This regional initiative under the theme “Science for Development and Transformation,” is designed to promote hands-on learning and scientific creativity in secondary schools. The competition also provides a vital national platform for students to exhibit their innovative ideas.

These ideas are aligned with real-world challenges and competence-based problem-solving across crucial fields such as Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ICT, and Mathematics.

Tuguma Benson, the Vice National Chairperson of the Uganda Professional Teachers’ Union emphasized the core philosophy behind the competition, stating, “Through this initiative, we found that one way to ensure our students access quality education is by letting them explore and expose their potential through different discoveries so that they can learn how to solve societal problems.”

Tuguma encouraged the learners to always benchmark their work, stressing the importance of continuous learning and improvement to become skilled innovators within the framework of the new student-centered curriculum.

Betty Auma, the National Secretary of UPSTU, commended the dedicated teachers who mentored these young learners, helping them realize their full potential. She expressed her strong belief that this initiative will significantly contribute to improving the quality of innovations within society.

The top five exhibitors from each region will advance to the national competition. From the Eastern Region, the schools that qualified to represent at the national level are Soroti Secondary School, Kakira Secondary School, Mbale Secondary School, and Kira College Butiki.
