In a bold move that signals her determination to serve the people of Tororo, former Ugandan High Commissioner to Kenya, Pibby Awere, has announced her candidacy as an independent candidate for the Tororo Woman MP seat in the upcoming 2026 general elections.

Awere made her announcement on August 5, 2025, during an interview on T FM’s “Community Connection” program, following a disappointing loss in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries.

Awere faced a tough battle against incumbent Sarah Achieng Opendi, who secured 65,720 votes compared to Awere’s 29,536.

Frustrated with the outcome, Awere cited significant irregularities in the election process, claiming that results in various sub-counties were manipulated by village registrars and lacked adherence to proper voting protocols.

Describing the primaries as a “total confusion,” Awere emphasized the need for increased voter awareness and civic education to ensure fair elections.

Her decision to run as an independent candidate comes amid growing dissent among other candidates who also contested the NRM primaries in Tororo.

Notable figures such as Annet Amella Nyaketcho, who campaigned for the Tororo North County MP seat, and Fox Odoi from West Budama North-East, are also considering independent runs, highlighting widespread discontent with how the primaries were conducted at the district level.

Awere’s announcement has sparked a wave of interest and support from constituents who are eager for a candidate they believe will genuinely represent their interests.

As she embarks on this new journey, Awere is calling on the people of Tororo to unite and embrace a candidacy that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and genuine representation.
