Job seekers in the eastern region are losing a total of 1.49 billion shillings as bribes to get jobs.

This report was revealed by the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) on Thursday, 11th September, 2025 during a stakeholders meeting held at Bukedea District Headquarters.

According to the report, administration, education and health sectors ranked as the most corrupt entities.

Mr. John Bosco Kabbale, the IGG supervisor in charge of research and learning says this has forced government to automate the system of applying for jobs right from the centre.

He said this is to eliminate conflict of interest between chairpersons of service commissions.

“We have got reports in most of the districts, chairpersons of service commissions having conflicts of interest in the recruitment processes and this fuels corruption,” said Mr. Kabbale.

Mr. James Luyimbazi, the Bukedea District Chief Administrative Officer told this publication that much as there’s corruption in the service commissions, political interference is one of the factors fueling corruption in the district.

“I want to appreciate the IGG team for the stakeholders engagement, but I want to share this, we face a challenge with politicians, you find that a politician comes with a list of applicants and claims that they are relatives”, said Mr. Luyimbazi.

However, William Wilberforce Tukei, RDC Bukedea cautioned the IGG team to be vigilant on the automated system of job application.

“This system can help to fight corruption but how safe will it be since the system will be controlled from the centre”, said RDC Tukei.
