The Butaleja District Deputy RDC, Betty Kalumba Lutamaguzi has condemned and banned the business of raising condolences during funerals at night citing a number of negativities associated.

While addressing journalists in her office on Friday afternoon, 19th September, 2025, Ms. Kalumba, argued that night funeral dances have increased cases of theft, adultery and defilement in the district.

She supported the program of fundraising at funerals, but emphasized that it’s more viable during day time. This comes amidst cries across Butaleja district, about attempts of theft, with a number of people lately, attaching the bad practices to night dances and night fundraisings.

Similarly, the Deputy RDC, asked parents to send their children back to schools saying government carried out negotiations with the teachers who went on strike on Monday.

She lamented that a lot of children are burying their future by resorting to watching films, or working in gardens; yet many of schools in urban areas opened for studies despite demand for the salary enhancement.

Kalumba, also tasked teachers to develop the spirit of patriotism, by helping the innocent children whose academic term is too short and the determinant of the next levels. She, however, guaranteed that government shall respond to the teachers positively, and soonest.

However, Yokosan Higenyi, the Chairperson for Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU), Butaleja branch, told the journalists that their negotiations are still ongoing adding that they expect a resolution by the Weekend.

Paul Wasanya, the district councillor for Butaleja Workers, welcomed the deputy RDC’s ban saying this will reduce crimes in the area.

He also encouraged the teachers to maintain their strike, stressing that they have for long been oppressed. He also warned anyone who dares to intimidate the striking teachers, that he will unleash his anger against them.

Wasanya, also condemned the Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO), of Naweyo, who allegedly intimidated the striking teachers in his sub county.
