SMACK Headteacher Under fire Over Student’s Death in School’s Swimming Pool

The Headteacher of St. Mary’s College Kisubi, Bro. Simon Mpanga is under fire following the death of a S.3 student who died by drowning in a swimming pool at the school campus. The nasty incident occurred on October 24, 2025, during a swimming lesson supervised by the school swimming instructor, Mr. Rogers Mukasa.

 

The Kampala metropolitan Police spokesperson, Mr.Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the ugly incident revealing that Kisubi Police station has commenced investigating the drowning of a senior three student identified as Peter Kirwana at St. Mary’s College, Kisubi (SMACK).

 

In a police statement issued, Afande Luke Owesigire stated that:” Kirwana’s death happened at around 5:40pm during a swimming lesson at the school premises on Friday October 24, 2025.

 

“It’s alleged that a Senior Three student, Peter Kirwana, drowned during a swimming lesson conducted by the school’s coach, Roger Mukasa, aged 46. The student was pulled out of the swimming pool by the coach with the help of fellow students but was found struggling to breath,” Afande Owesigire explained.

 

However, he noted that the student was rushed to Kisubi Hospital while in coma and upon arrival, he was pronounced dead.

 

“Police responded immediately, a death Enquiry File has been opened at Kisubi Police Station, and the coach has been arrested and charged with rush and neglect,” Mr. Owesigire revealed.

 

Owoyesigyire further said the deceased body was taken to Mulago Hospital for postmortem as investigations into his death continue.

 

Headteacher”s statement angers parents & Alumni

 

On October 25, 2025, the school Headteacher issued a statement surrounding the demise of the deceased student which did not satisfy parents and the alumni.

 

In his statement Bro. Mpanga stated:

 

“With profound sadness, we announce the untimely death of our beloved student, Kirwana Peter, S.3, “Bro. Mpanga stated in his unconvincing statement as alleged by some parents and Alumni.

 

“The Burial will be held on Sunday, 26th October in Narozali, Masaka at 4pm. Our Heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. May Peter’s Soul rest in Peace,” he condoled with the bereaved family.

 

However, the head teacher’s failure to adequately explain the circumstances under which the student died has left more questions from parents, school community and Alumni.

 

A section of disappointed parents and Old Boys reportedly expressed concern over lack of transparency surrounding the incident and have since demanded a detailed explanation of what exactly happened to the deceased.

 

In similar news, the deceased student was laid to rest on Sunday October 26, 2025 in Masaka district.
