Tanzanian Opposition Leader Tundu Lissu has won his treason case against the Government.
The Supreme Court of Tanzania in a ruling on Friday, 24th October, 2025 has acquitted him of all charges and officially set him free.
However, in a bold and symbolic move, Lissu has chosen to remain in prison until 29th October 2025, the day after the upcoming General Elections.
He intends to challenge the election results, arguing that President Samia Suluhu Hassan deliberately kept him in prison during the campaign period to compete against herself, effectively denying the nation a fair and free election.
For Lissu, this is more than a legal victory; it’s a political statement. He insists that his imprisonment during the campaign period was deliberate an attempt by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government to silence him and tilt the race in her favor. By staying behind bars, Lissu says he is standing up against what he calls “a democracy robbed of choice.”
Supporters have described his decision as both brave and defiant, a gesture that captures the frustration of many Tanzanians who believe the political system is rigged against change. Outside the prison walls, chants of “Lissu ni sauti ya wananchi” echoed as supporters celebrated his acquittal but demanded justice beyond the courtroom.
Whether his stand will influence the outcome of the upcoming election remains to be seen. But one thing is clear Tundu Lissu has turned his cell into a stage, and his silence into a powerful protest against a system he believes still fears his voice.
