BUTALEJA

The Butaleja district NRM conference members have successfully elected Elvis Weere, as their new NRM flag bearer, for the LCV seat.

The hot contest that took place on Friday, 31st October, 2025, initially involved 4 candidates: Elvis Weere, Ivan Nangulu Hinapuuna, Jacob Wangolo and James Wire; but Wire, and Wangolo at last pulled out of the race, at the eve of the voting, detecting defeat.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM returning officer, who presided over the exercise declared Elvis Weere, winner, upon having scored 124 votes, against Ivan Nangulu, who polled 71 votes.

Dr. Odoi, remarked that the electoral exercise was very peaceful, adding that Butaleja district has been identified with violence in the process. He challenged Elvis to embrace team work, and asked the victor to champion the mobilisation for President Museveni’s votes. The Returning officer (Odoi), also boasted that they have 12 unopposed NRM MPs, hoping for more victory in the forthcoming elections.

Weere thanked the party members for their trust in him, and promised team work. He promised to distance himself from rumours but welcomed pieces of advice for a better Butaleja district.

Ivan Nangulu Hinapuuna, conceded defeat meanwhile, Weere, was immediately nominated by the Independent Electoral Commission for the LCV bid.

Importantly, the NRM flag bearer, Joseph Muyonjo, died last week in Mbale referral hospital and was buried on Sunday.
