IGANGA
An intelligence led operation on Thursday 6th November 2025 bust a counterfeit dollar racket in Namungalwe Town Council, Iganga district, and arrested 4 suspects.
Busoga East Regional police spokesperson ASP Micheal Kasadha says the operation followed intelligence information about the criminal activities ranging from counterfeit dollar issuance, and aggravated robbery of cash.
He identified the suspects as Isabirye Juma alias Magezi 30 a business man and a resident of Buwenge Town council in Jinja district,
Bamwitire Shafik 22 a business man and a resident of Buwenge Town council in Jinja district, Badagawa Micheal 24, a Chapati seller at Kawete and a resident of Kawete village Namungalwe town council in Iganga district, and Nyende Isaac Augustus 30, a resident of Nsinze, Namungalwe Town council in Iganga district.
ASP Kasadha said the victims are lured from as far as Central region to dollar exchange business.
“They are tricked by first giving them genuine dollars which convinces them to surrender huge amounts of cash before being confronted with violence as the money is robbed. These criminal acts have continuously occured at Kawete trading center and Nsinze in Bulumwagi village, Iganga district.” Said ASP Kasadha.
On the 27th October 2025 , Muyingo Christopher Nathan 45, a resident of Bunga church zone in Kampala district was robbed of Ug Shs 6,000,000, from Kawete, Namungalwe town council in Iganga district.
On the 28/10/2025, Ssemakula Bashir 46, a resident of Kiboba village Nama Sub county in Mukono district was robbed of Ug Shs 6,900,000, from Kawete, Namungalwe town council in Iganga district.
On the 29/10/2025, OKurut Ben 30,a business man and a resident of Igaitani village, Namayemba Town council was robbed of Ug Shs 18,000,000. This occured at Bulamagi Sub county in Iganga district.
These rocketing criminal occurrences have caused public outcry and insecurities where mostly distant individuals have been victims.
ASP Kasadha said that during the operation, an iPad phone belonging to one of the victims was recovered and it was exhibited.
Police says the hunt is still on to have more culprits arrested and prosecuted.
It cautioned the public against falling victim to counterfeit currency scams, specifically those involving fake US dollars.
