Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Tom Magambo, Director of Criminal Investigations (CID) in the Uganda Police Force, has denied any involvement in the property dispute between Prof. Badru Kateregga and his wife, Mrs. Jolly Shubaiha Kateregga.
For several weeks, AIGP Magambo’s name has surfaced in relation to the widely publicized family dispute, leading the Uganda Police Force to release an official statement on Monday, 22nd December, 2025 denying any interference or influence in the matter.
AIGP Magambo says his team has brought to his attention a WhatsApp message circulating in some groups, dragging his name into the family wrangles of Professor Katerega and his wife.
He notes that the Police PRO had earlier publicly updated the country on the family conflict and advised that the matter be handled as a civil issue, adding that as CID, they have no mandate to intervene.
“I have never met Professor Katerega or his wife personally, and that the insinuations by diversionary forces suggesting they are known to each other should be treated with the contempt they deserve. I urge the public to focus on building the motherland, Uganda,” AIGP Magambo said.
On July 25, 2025, the Police Force reiterated its position after statements circulated on social media and other outlets alleging police involvement in the matter.
The Police explained that the domestic dispute was first reported on November 7, 2024, and was duly investigated under reference CID HQRS/GEF 306/204.
“The case file was submitted to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review and legal guidance. On February 18, 2025, the ODPP advised that the dispute stemmed from property ownership and management issues, which fall outside the mandate of the police and are best resolved in a civil court. This guidance was communicated to both parties through their lawyers,” the police statement reads in part.
“The Police further clarified that Prof. Kateregga’s expectation that the CID could remove Mrs. Jolly Shubaiha Kateregga from the premises was misplaced, as such action lies beyond police authority. Alteration of possession of disputed property can only be effected through a court order, and any request for police action outside this legal framework cannot be entertained, ”the statement reads.
