The government of Uganda has unveiled plans to revamp the child day care centre at Tororo Central Market, a move aimed at easing the burden of care for female vendors and promoting uninterrupted trade.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, is part of the World Bank–funded GROW project.

It seeks to retool the centre, equip staff with professional skills, and transform it into a safe, affordable learning space for children.

Originally established during the construction of the market in 2021, the day care centre struggled to attract children until late last year when new management introduced programs that began to breathe life into the facility.

Speaking during an inaugural meeting with Tororo Municipal Council officials, Rodgers Golooba, Senior Probation and Welfare Officer at the Ministry of Gender, confirmed that Tororo is among 21 MATIP markets across Uganda set to benefit from the program.

“This project will reduce the burden of care for local women entrepreneurs, provide safe spaces for children, create job opportunities, and improve the overall effectiveness of our markets,” Golooba said.

Tororo Municipality Town Clerk, Ayub Kisubi welcomed the initiative, pledging full support from the council.

He emphasized that the centre will allow mothers to conduct business with ease, knowing their children are cared for in a safe environment.
