TORORO, UGANDA

Tororo Municipality MP-elect, Shyam Jay Tanna has moved swiftly to translate campaign promises into action, delivering two fully drilled and cast boreholes within just five weeks of winning the election.
The projects, lobbied and supervised directly by Tanna, were completed by 1st March, 2026 and are now awaiting official commissioning.
The initiative was made possible courtesy of Hefin Rees, Spotlight Africa, and Lord Popat of the UK House of Lords, in whose honour the projects were undertaken.
The first borehole was installed at Manjasi High School, where a previously non-functional water source had become nearly impossible to repair. The second was drilled at Juba Primary School, providing a long-awaited solution to persistent water access challenges affecting both pupils and surrounding households.
Immediate Community Impact
The impact of the boreholes is already being described as transformative improved hygiene and student health, better learning conditions and school attendance.
It has also helped save students from walking long distances in search of water, will provide support for school agriculture and student nutrition and provide safe water access for neighbouring households.
Water security in these communities is strengthening education, protecting public health, and restoring dignity to families who previously relied on unreliable and distant water sources.
Observers note that Tanna strategically ensured equitable distribution, with one project serving the Western Division and the other the Eastern Division of the Municipality, reinforcing his message of inclusive service delivery.
“This is only the beginning,” Tanna stated, emphasising that leadership must be measured by action rather than rhetoric.
For many residents, the swift completion of the two boreholes signals an active and delivery-focused start to his tenure — a foundation, they say, for broader infrastructure improvements in Tororo Municipality under his leadership.
