Mbale city authorities have today, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, impounded over 100 kgs of rotten/ unsafe meat and arrested three butcher-men at Mbale Central Market.

Hamuza Banja, deputy resident city commissioner of Industrial city division during an exclusive interview with our reporter says the operation followed intelligence that butcheries were selling unsafe meat, and using preservatives like formalin to conceal spoilage.

The suspects whose names were withheld by the RCC are being taken to face prosecution at Mbale city court commonly known as Ndawula court with the impounded meat as exhibit.

Banja says the meat was unfit for human consumption, posing disease risks. Traders found guilty face arrest, fines, or imprisonment.

Sam Majenga, a butcher, says some butcher-men smuggle meat from Bududa which is unsafe.

He expressed his happiness with the operation saying it’s going to help the locals to consume safer meat.

Mbale City Health Officer Moses Mugonyi warns that uninspected meat can spread diseases like brucellosis, TB, and anthrax.
