BREAKING! MP’s Elect Speaker of 12th Parliament

Members of Parliament in their first sitting of the first session of the 12th Parliament have elected Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth Markson as Speaker.

 

Oboth Oboth polled 441 votes beating off NUP’s Paul Mwiru who came second with 60 votes and DP’s Nobert Mao who came last with 15 votes.

 

Oboth Oboth immediately took oath at exactly 1:30PM on Monday, May 25, 2026 and received instruments of Parliament beginning with the Mace from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

 

Other instruments include the Uganda Flag, Court of Arms, Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, a Copy of Rules of Procedure of Parliament and lastly the Speaker’s robes.

 

The elections was overseen by the Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija who declared Rt. Hon. Jacob Oboth duly elected Speaker of Parliament after polling the highest of votes. The elections saw three spoilt votes.
