KAMPALA: NEMA Stops Illegal Estate Construction On Kajjansi Wetland

National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has stopped and illegal Estate construction on Kajjansi wetland in Kampala City.

 

According to a NEMA press statement issued on Monday, 1st June, 2026, NEMA carried out the intelligence led operation in conjunction with the Department of Wetlands Management, Ministry of Water and Environment and relevant Local Governments on Sunday, 31st May, 2026.

 

“Our team successfully located the site on which an illegal estate is coming up in a wetland. We thank the public for sharing the video,” NEMA posted on its X-Handle.

 

NEMA furthers says Initial arrests have been made vide SD REF: 04/31/05/2026 and construction halted, meanwhile, Environment Restoration Orders will be issued as investigations deepen.

 

NEMA urges all persons who have encroached on wetlands across the country to peacefully vacate the wetlands before the operations reach them warning that the Authority is determined to protect Uganda’s environment.

 

Wetlands are critical ecosystems that provide numerous environmental services including flood control, water purification, biodiversity conservation and climate regulation.
