The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has begun relocating animals to a new regional zoo in Mbale, bringing wildlife conservation closer to communities in Eastern Uganda.
According to Rashid Hangi, the UWA public relations officer, Operating as the UWEC–Mbale Zoo, the facility has already received lions, a zebra, a waterbuck, an ostrich, and peacocks, with UWA reporting that the animals are settling in well.
He says the initiative is aimed at boosting conservation awareness, education, and tourism in the region by giving residents easier access to wildlife experiences.
The official opening is scheduled for June 12, 2026. UWA says more updates will be shared in the coming days as preparations continue.
