A driver who deliberately attempted to run over a traffic officer has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Patrick Onyango, the Deputy Police Spokesperson revealed this on Tuesday, 13th June 2023 saying the driver of motor vehicle UAZ 515C is Mukwaya Isaac.
Mukwaya’s attempt later went viral on social media after the act was captured on video.
According to Onyango, the incident occurred on Kampala Road
“The incident was captured in a video circulating on social, wherein our officer was attempting to stop the vehicle, but instead of complying with the directives, the driver chose to endanger the life of the police officer,” Onyango says in a press statement.
He says, upon arrest, the driver attempted to deceive the authorities by pretending to be sick when brought in for interrogation.
“However, upon examination, it was determined that he was in normal health and had intentionally inserted the cannula into his hand,” Onyango says.
He says Mukwaya was arrested and is being detained at CPS Kampala.
Meanwhile, the officer, who narrowly escaped being struck by the vehicle, is Katongole Josam.
The police have filed three charges against Mukwaya that include Violating traffic lights, Reckless driving and Attempted murder.
“We urge the general public, particularly motorists, to adhere to the instructions provided by our traffic officers,” Onyango says.
