The National Environmental Authority (NEMA) has today 19th December, 2023 with assistance of KCCA and Uganda Police carried out an eviction of Lubigi wetland encroachers.
The reclamation is taking place at the Busega Roundabout, Mityana Road, and Nansana-Nabweru Road with the main purpose of restoring the Lubigi Wetland System.
The joint mission included Ministry of Water, NEMA, KCCA, Umeme, UNRA, State House Anti-Corruption Unit, and the Presidential Special Taskforce.
The operation is expected to continue till Wednesday, 20th December, 2023.
On Oct 13, 2023, a collaborative effort by the same institutions made strides in reclaiming sections of the Lubigi Wetland specifically Busega Roundabout and Busega-Mityana Road.
“Today’s operation builds on that momentum, reinforcing environmental restoration,” reads a statement by NEMA.
Beyond evictions, the mission extends to demobilizing the former material yard linked to the northern bypass construction.
“Stones and fish-smoking stoves will be cleared from the site,” NEMA says warning that their operation is extending to the Nansana-Nabweru Road Lubigi wetland section.
