A joint team from National Environment Management Authority, Ministry of Water and Environment and Environmental Protection Police Unit has halted the degradation of Nakiyanja Wetland by Ms Genagri Limited.

This was revealed in a press statement issued on Wednesday, 9th April, 2024 by NEMA in which it says the move is to protect the critical ecosystem at Sonde, Kira Municipality in Kampala City.

Nakiyanja is a critical wetland that drains into River Ssezibwe which eventually serves the greater Kayunga and Mukono districts.

The Wetland had been encroached upon by Ms Genagri Limited who had hoodwinked NEMA Inspectors with a certificate of approval NO:NEMA:EIA/15422 issued to develop mixed residential and commercial structures on a small piece of dry land elsewhere.

NEMA says Ms Genagri instead opted to encroach on the nearby wetland. She will now be subjected to prosecution or payment of fine upon completion of investigations.

NEMA reminds the general public that the Authority indefinitely suspended approvals and issuance of permits on Wetlands on the 2nd September, 2021.
