SOROTI CITY

Equity Bank, Soroti City Branch has survived a robbery attempt that took place between midnight and 3:00Am last night, 23rd April, 2024.
Speaking to the Media about the incident, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Edison Obukulem, the acting police spokes person East Kyoga said Police have arrested two security guards to aide in investigation into the failed robbery at Equity Bank Soroti Branch.
He says further that the duo is security guards of Security Group Africa that were deployed to guard the Bank at night.
Obukulem says after the case was reported at Soroti Central police station, the guards who worked at night at the Bank were called and one said he was admitted at the hospital while the colleague is still at large.
When verified later, it was discovered that he was not at the hospital. Police also arrested the Supervisor of Security Group Africa who responded to the alert and came to the scene.
Police was notified at 3am about the attempted robbery and two patrol cars managed to reach the scene and condone off the place immediately. However, sources within the Bank say, the robbers accessed the Bank through the back doors at about midnight.
After the scene was condoned off, a canine dog was brought in jointly with scene of crime officers. By the time of filing this story, security officers had still condoned off Equity Bank, Soroti branch.
The Bank manager, Francis Erupu told the media that nothing was tampered within the Bank.
Edwin Benesa, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner Soroti City East expressed concern on the security of Equity Bank saying the Bank sits in a house that has no cameras behind. He said the absence of the camera behind the building is making their work hard in investigation process.
Benesa also expresses concern about UMEME saying that within the time the robbers attempted to break in the Bank, power also disappeared.
“I want to commend the members of the public for being vigilant, if they had not notified police timely, the Bank would have lost colossal sums of money. The other issue is how power went off just within the proximity of the time the robbers were breaking into the bank, power went off. It raises a big question that needs to be answered,” he said.
