Rt. Hon. Anita Among, Uganda’s Parliament Speaker has told off the United Kingdom over its sanctions announced on Tuesday, 30th April, 2024 by the Deputy Foreign Secretary, Mitchell Andrew.

“Dear LGBTQ community, we expected sanctions earlier before this, we are more stronger than you think because God is with us,” Among said on her X handle on Tuesday, 30th April, 2024.

Lending credence to his boss’ reaction to the sanctions, Chris Obore, the Parliament’s Director of communications and Public Affairs says that whereas the sanctions are tied to the three for allegedly benefiting from resources meant for the poor, Among has never been arraigned in any court of law over the same.

Obore says the real unstated but clearly obvious reason is, “the Rt. Hon. Speaker’s stance on the recently enacted Anti-homosexuality bill.”

“The truth is that the iron sheets were distributed to schools and the Hon Mitchell who was vocal in condemning the Rt. Hon. Speaker Among for enacting the Anti-Homosexuality bill did not in any way show how the Speaker derived personal benefit from them (iron sheets),” says Obore in a press release dated 30th April, 2024..

Rt. Hon. Anita Among was sanctioned alongside the former Ministers for Karamoja Affairs, Mary Goretti Kitutu and her deputy, Agnes Nandutu.
