On Saturday 29 June, Busia Fisheries FC emerged victorious in the Eastern Regional League Bukedi Zonal Mini playoff, defeating Chalo FC/Busolwe Town Council 4-3 in penalties after a 0-0 draw in regular time.
The tournament, held at Booma Ground in Butaleja District, showcased the best of Eastern Region’s football talent, with 20 teams from various districts participating.
The Vice Chairperson of the Eastern Regional League, Mr. Sam Lwere, congratulated the organizers, referees, and teams for their dedication to the beautiful game.
He welcomed Chalo FC to the Eastern Regional League and declared Busia Fisheries the winner of the tournament.
Mr. Wamalwa George a member of the competition committee Eastern Region, representing Mr. Mulekwa Herbert the vice chairperson Competition Eastern Regional League, announced the promotion of three teams – Busia Fisheries from Busia, Chalo FC from Butaleja, and Busamaga Redstar from Mbale, to the Eastern Regional League Bukedi group, replacing the relegated teams.
He congratulated all participating teams and praised the tournament’s success in promoting the best teams to the next season.
“Congratulations to all teams that participated in the tournament! We appreciate your enthusiasm and sportsmanship,” said the league officials. “Important dates to note: player registration will open on July 1st and close on September 21st. Teams must register their players during this period to obtain the necessary licenses, and the league is scheduled to commence soon after,” George emphasized.
The nine-day tournament saw teams from Busia, Manafwa, Sironko, Mbale, Butaleja, and Tororo battle it out for the top spot Unfortunately, teams from Palisa, Kibuuku, Budaka, and Bududa did not participate this year.
Busia Fisheries FC’s triumph marks a significant achievement for the team and also returning in the Eastern Regional League after one season, and their dedication and hard work have earned them a well-deserved promotion.
