The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among Annet has called off Parliamentary Plenary Sittings that had resumed on Tuesday, 23rd July, 2024 after a month’s hiatus.

According to a letter written by the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesigye today, 24th July, 2024, the Plenary has been called off for the whole week until 30th July, 2024.

The letter however, does not give reasons why the Plenary Sittings have abruptly been called off.

“I have been directed by the Rt. Hon. Speaker, that Plenary has been called off until Tuesday, 3oth July at 2:00PM,” reads Adolf brief letter to all Members of Parliament.

On Tuesday, Parliament resumed business amidst protests by a section of youths against what they say is corruption in Parliament. During the Plenary as well, a number of MPs stood up to speak about the alleged corruption in Parliament tasking the Chair of the day, Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa to allow the issue be discussed in the House.

Among them was Hon. Alion Yorke Odria MP for Aringa South County Yumbe District who accused the House Leadership of blocking any debate on corruption allegations against some Members of the House.

Meanwhile, the government Chief Whip, Hamson Obua has revealed that Speaker Among was compelled to call of today’s plenary sitting, because the presiding officer of today’s sitting was holding a “strategic” meeting with President Museveni at the time the sitting was meant to take place.

“I know that the Presiding Officer, under the Parliamentary calendar who is supposed to chair the sitting today is at the moment involved in a strategic meeting with the head of state,” said Obua.
