Embattled Kenya’s Deputy President G. Rigathi Gachagua has resigned hours before his impeachment trial at the Senate was to kick off.
Gachagua tendered in his resignation to President Dr. William Ruto in the morning of Wednesday, 16th October, 2024 saying he is resigning ‘not in defeat but with a heavy heart and clear mind.”
Gachagua says the impeachment proceedings against him are nothing but a kangaroo court and that he is sure he will not get justice there.
He has also attacked the Tuesday’s High Court ruling that gave the Senate a go ahead with the impeachment trial saying, ‘The High Court’s ruling yesterday (Tuesday) confirmed my worst fears. The law has been twisted, and neither the Senate nor the Courts will offer me a fair trial. If I continue I risk being barred from holding any state office for life – condemned without cause.”
The embattled now former Deputy President says, “It is with this in mind and with my eye on 2027 that I choose to resign. My fight is not over. I have simply chosen another path.”
Gachagua also threatens to reveal what he says he has seen in Ruto’s government with time.
