Bugisu Cultural Institution, Inzu Yamasaba has today Wednesday, 4th December, 2024 officially banned sharp objects during the circumcision dances, Kadodi. The banned objects are Pangas, knives and or machetes.
The ban was announced by Wilson Watila, the Chairman of ‘’ Imbalu’’ [Circumcision] at Inzu Yamasaba and former LCV chairperson, Bududa district while speaking to media at Inzu yamasaba head offices located at Malukhu in Mbale City.
According to Watila, Inzu Yamasaba decided to come up with this ban because according to Bamasaba cultural norms, it’s a taboo to dance with sharp objects made by whites during Kadodi dancing or taking a boy to be circumcised.
He adds that besides there have cases of violence, murder and injuries caused on dancers by their colleagues.
Watila cited a murder incident which happened in November at Bududa district where a 20 year old youth killed his colleague during a Kadodi dance accusing him (deceased) of dancing with his girlfriend.
Francis Manyaku, the LCIII chairperson of Budadiri Town Council in Sironko district says that even before Masaba cultural institution [Inzu Yamasaba] came up with the ban today, his council passed a bylaw last week ordering security to arrest anybody seen dancing Kadodi with sharp objects.
He adds that the Kadodi dancers tend to destroy people’s crops by cutting them on the way while dancing for no reason.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson when contacted on phone, says moving with sharp objects in public is criminal and someone can be arrested adding that the ban has come at the right time.
