The Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja has sanctioned the construction works on the gazetted 18,000 acres of land in Bunambutye Sub County for the relocation of over 5,000 Bulambuli landslide victims.

During a pilot tour on Wednesday evening, 11th December, 2024 on the land located in Buluguya parish, Bulwanga village in Bulambuli district, Hon. Nabanja, told a delegation that included local leaders, MPs and representatives from the humanitarian agencies that the government plans to allocate two acres of land and UGX 17 million to each affected household.

The Minister emphasized that no housings will be constructed during the relocation compared to the previous model of providing fully constructed houses.

The Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Relief, and Refugees, Ms Lilian Aber, said this is a government plan to relocate them to safer government-provided land in Bulambuli District.

The over 2,112 victims currently sheltered in the camp are crying of over congestion calling upon the government to expedite the relocation exercise.

Nabaya Timothy and Wanyanze Katty both victims from Sissi sub county say much as the government has provided food and shelter, the accommodation is still limited which is leading to an increased risk of disease outbreaks.

”We appreciate the government for having brought us to this safer area, but as a man I cannot just depend on the government, I have to fend for my family, with the quality of food we are not used to, so we pray to the government to speed up this relocation process” says Nabaya.

So far 36 bodies have been recovered as excavation by the UPDF continues.
