At least seven people have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in a road crash involving a taxi and a Fuso truck on Monday, 16th December, 2024 at Bulanga in Iganga district along the Iganga-Jinja highway when the vehicles collided head-on.

The crash involved a taxi, registration number UBP 140D, transporting passengers from Iganga to Kampala, and a Fuso truck, registration number UAX 761B, carrying packed milk from Kampala to the border district of Busia.

According to initial reports, the taxi driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the collision occurred.

Three people were reported dead at the scene, while five others succumbed to their injuries either en route to the hospital or after admission.

The fatalities included seven male adults and one female adult. Some of the deceased have been identified as Arajabu Menya, 30, a tipper driver from Bulanga trading center; Kakaire Rajab, 23, a resident of Iganga; and Hassan Kiige, 30, a businessman from Nabitende in Iganga district.

Efforts were still underway to identify other victims at the time of reporting.

Injured survivors were rushed to Iganga General Hospital and later referred to Jinja Regional Hospital and Mulago National Referral Hospital for further treatment.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Iganga Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Residents of Bulanga have called for the installation of speed humps at the accident site, citing frequent fatalities in the area due to repeated accidents.

According to Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson, the wreckage from the crash was towed to Magamaga Police Station for further investigation.

He attributed the accident to reckless driving and careless overtaking by both motorists involved.

By press time, the vehicle was at Magamaga police station but drivers of the two vehicles were on the run as police hunted for them.
