The Ministry of Works and Transport on Thursday, 16th January, 2025 received 7 Vehicle Inspections Stations from M/S SGS Company.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry on its X-Handle, transfer of the Stations follows the termination of M/S SGS Mandatory Vehicle Inspection contract in 2020 and Cabinet’s decision to compensate SGS of their total investment in 2023.
The compensation amount of Shs109.9bn was arrived at and 30% of the compensation amount has already been paid.
“Following the payment of the first 30% and the reinstallation of the vehicle inspection equipment by SGS, the facilities were today handed over to Ministry of Works and Transport,” reads the Ministry’s statement.
The 7 Stations are located in Namanve, Namulanda, Nabbingo, Kawanda, in and around Kampala.
Whereas, the regional stations are; Gulu, Mbarara and Mbale.
These stations will be used for mandatory motor vehicle inspection which entails ascertaining the mechanical condition of a car, its documentation like its ownership and registration. It also ensures that what is written in the logbook is exactly what is on the vehicles.
The Ministry of Transport says the same Stations will now going forward be used as fitment centers for Digital Registration Plates under the ITMS Project.
This will in turn improve road safety and protect the environment through the mandatory inspection of all vehicles in the country for roadworthiness and environmental compliance.
