The Ministry of Works and Transport, Mbale Substation has responded swiftly and restored normal traffic at the Nalugugu diversion bridge along Namunsi- Sironko road.
This was revealed by Susan Kataike, Head of Communications at the Ministry of Works & Transport on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
Meanwhile, Kataike says Mbale Station team is all hands on deck undertaking restoration works after the water levels have subsided at the Nalugugu Bridge.
On Tuesday, this publication ran a story indicating that the Nalugugu Bridge on the Kapchorwa–Mbale highway was completely washed away on Sunday night following torrential rains that pounded the area.
The bridge is a vital transport link connecting the Karamoja, Sebei, and Bugisu sub-regions and its destruction caused massive traffic disruptions, leaving hundreds of vehicles, including buses and cargo trucks, stranded on both sides.
By Tuesday, only motorcycles and light vehicles were cautiously using a narrow surviving section of the bridge, while heavy trucks remained grounded.
Consequently traffic was diverted through Budari, connecting to Mutufu Road and Sironko Town before proceeding to Mbale. The alternative route added about 12 kilometers to the journey.
The report by Ministry of Works gives hope to many motorists that were affected by the diversion.
