Police in Mbale City on Saturday arrested Akram Kairoki, a Senior Three student of Mbale High School, for allegedly murdering his schoolmate, Shafik Wasike, a 19-year-old Senior Four student on Monday evening, 28th July, 2025.

The incident happened at Amber Stores in the Indian Quarters, Mbale City last month, where these students reportedly developed fights after being released from school.

Kairoki is said to have used a sharp object to stab Wasike, who was later pronounced dead at Mbale Regional Referral hospital, where he was rushed by three colleagues.

While speaking to the media on Saturday, 23rd August, 2025, the Elgon Region Police spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika confirmed the arrest, saying Kairoki was tracked down after days of searching.

He said the suspect had been hiding at Busolwe town council in Butalja district where police picked him from after being tipped off by the community.

Taitika says the suspect is now in police custody at Mbale City Police and will be paraded before court to answer charges of murder.

The late Shafik Wasike, a resident of Bujoloto in Nkoma Ward, Mbale City, was laid to rest at their ancestral home in Kabwangasi Town Council.
