MBALE CITY
Zandya Mafabi Mutwalibu, the former Mbale City Mayor has been sacked from the National Unity Platform (NUP) for defying party guidelines.
Mafabi contested for the NUP ticket for mayor but lost to Mansa Musa, who was nominated on Friday. After failing to secure the ticket, Mafabi declared his intention to run as an independent candidate for the Mbale city mayor seat.
Fazali Nabende, NUP’s Bugisu region coordinator, explained to our report today at Mbale central police station that according to party laws and guidelines, losing a primary election and contesting against the party candidate for the same position means Mafabi has automatically left the party.
Nabende stated that Mafabi would need to reapply to the party’s general secretary to be recruited as a member afresh.
Nabende urged NUP supporters and members to distance themselves from Mafabi, as he is no longer a party member.
Mafabi has since been nominated as an independent candidate for the mayoral seat, alongside other candidates, including Cassim Namugali for FDC, Mansa Musa for NUP and Vincent Magombe for NRM.
Mafabi crossed from mother party FDC this year to NUP after getting disagreements.
Getting a comment from Mafabi was futile because his known phone numbers were off by press time.
