National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has questioned the citizenship of Namisindwa County NRM MP Flagbearer, Metrin Nanzala Musufwa.

NIRA letter

In a letter dated 29th September, 2025, Rosemary Kisembo, the NIRA Executive Director says it has come to the attention of NIRA that Musufwa is actually a Kenyan national who when registering with NIRA did not indicate or prove dual citizenship.

“During your registration for national identification, you registered as a citizen of Uganda by birth belonging to the Banelima clan, indigenous community. The Authority subsequently assigned you a NIN: CF85067100WPRA,” writes NIRA.

Kisembo avers further that, “However, it has come to our attention that you are a citizen of the Republic of Kenya without evidence of a certificate of dual citizenship.”

Kisembo quoting Section 57 (a) (b) of the Registration of Persons Act, now threatens to cancel the registration of Musufwa because her registration was obtained based on inaccurate, incomplete and fraudulent information.

Consequently NIRA gave Musufwa seven (7) days from the date the letter was written to show cause why her registration should not be cancelled for non-submission of a certificate of dual citizenship.

“Failure to do so will lead to cancellation of your registration,” warns Kisembo.

Cancellation of Musufwa’s registration automatically stops her from contesting for the Parliamentary seat according to Article 80 of the Constitution of Uganda, which states that a person is qualified to be a Member of Parliament if he/she is a Ugandan Citizen. Citizenship is a fundamental requirement.

Aramazani Wabuko, the Namisindwa NRM Chairperson while speaking to our reporter today Tuesday, 7th October, confirmed receiving the letter saying the Party is doing what it takes to make sure that they submit the requirements to prove that Musufwa is Ugandan.

He called for calm among the Namisindwa County voters saying the matter is being handled.

However, when contacted on phone, Musufwa disowned the letter saying it’s written and being circulated by her opponent whom she threatened to deal with legally

Metrin Musufwa Nanzala beat the incumbent, Apollo Masika in the NRM Primaries garnering 28,108 votes against Masika’s 15,477 votes.
