Buganda Kingdom premier, Charles Peter Mayiga, has declared the end of the restoration process of Kasubi Tombs which began in 2014 after a devastating fire in 2010 damaged the site.
Speaking to the media on Friday 12th December 2025 at Kasubi Tombs, Mayiga said that the tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, has been meticulously reconstructed to preserve its original design and cultural significance.
The restoration efforts which cost over Shs.13 billion, Mayiga said was a collaborative success, involving the Ugandan authorities, heritage professionals, and local communities.
Meanwhile, he noted that the process has taken years without completion due to different challenges including limited funding and lack of a clear plan to restore the site following all the cultural norms.
Some of the restored sites include; The main tomb, Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, which has been rebuilt with traditional materials and techniques, and numerous small houses housing the Tomb, and advanced firefighting equipment has been installed to protect the site from future damage.
