NAMISINDWA
Security and local leaders in Namisindwa District have launched a manhunt for Joseph Musawale, a resident of Bukokho Parish in Bukokho Sub-county, for allegedly killing his friend and neighbor, Gerald Nyungu, on Friday, 6th March.
The incident reportedly occurred as Nyungu was approaching the premises of Bukokho Church of Uganda to attend an overnight prayer.
Reports indicate that the two had a misunderstanding stemming from an earlier incident in which Musawale accused Nyungu of kicking his dog. Musawale allegedly waited for him on Friday night and attacked him with a panga.
Nyungu was rushed by Good Samaritans to Magale Health Centre IV, where he later died from his injuries.
Local leaders have since intensified the search for Musawale. Bukokho Sub-county LCIII Chairperson, John Wafula, said security structures have been activated to track down the suspect so that he can face justice. He also raised concern about the increasing number of youths moving around at night carrying pangas and loitering at vigils and night parties. He warned that youths found moving with pangas at night risk arrest.
The Namisindwa LCV Chairperson-elect, Emma Bwayo, attributed the incident to rising cases of drug abuse and mental health challenges among young people.
He noted that many youths are unable to control their anger due to such issues.
Bwayo added that within the past seven days, he has attended the burial of three people whose deaths involved violent acts by young people. These include the killing of Lonah Mutonyi in Bukiabi by her stepson, the defilement and murder of a 19-year-old girl whose body was later dumped in the hills, and the recent death of Nyungu.
Meanwhile, Namisindwa Deputy RDC Kaswabuli JB urged parents to take greater responsibility in raising their children. He said many parents have abandoned their roles and left upbringing to teachers and government officials. He also pledged to intensify operations targeting idle youths in the district.
