Retired Supreme Court Justice Augustine Nshimye, Dies at 80

Retired Supreme Court Justice Augustine Nshimye has died at the age of 80. The death that occurred on Friday, 3rd April, 2026 at his home along Mawanda Road in Kampala was confirmed by Justice Flavia Zeija, the Chief Justice in a moving eulogy.

 

“It is with profound sorrow that the judiciary has learnt of the death of Justice Augustine Sebutulo Nshimye, a distinguished jurist, seasoned public servant, and Statesman,” reads Justice Flavia’s eulogy.

 

Justice Augustine Nshimye who died nine years after his retirement from the Judiciary was born on 12th December, 1946 in Namutamba, Bulera Sub County in Mityana district.

 

He began his career as a Clerical Officer in 1966 and rose through the ranks of the Judiciary rising to Grade 1 Magistrate, to ultimately Justice of the Supreme Court.

 

A message also from one Social media group for the Judicial officers also shows Mawanda relaying a message about the Judge’s death from High Court Justice Allan Nshimye of Mbarara, who is the deceased’s son.

 

According to the message, the body has been transferred to Uganda Funeral Services, where it is being kept as the family prepares and communicates further burial arrangements.

 

In 2008, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal, which also doubles as the Constitutional Court.

 

He later served as an acting Justice of the Supreme Court in 2010 before his substantive appointment to the Supreme Court in September 2015.

 

Beyond the judiciary, Nshimye had a notable political career. He served as Member of Parliament for Mityana South constituency from 1988 to 2008.

 

He also served as Minister for Regional Cooperation under President Yoweri Museveni. He was also among the founding members of the ruling party.

 

In 2015, he took on additional responsibilities as Inspector of Courts and further contributed to judicial oversight and administration.

 

Colleagues and members of the legal fraternity have begun expressing condolences on social media platforms, remembering him as a dedicated public servant who contributed significantly to Uganda’s judiciary and governance.
