DP President General, Hon. Norbert Mao has spoken out on his presence at the Kyankwanzi National NRM Leaders Retreat that opened on 8th April, 2026.
Mao went to his X-Account today, Thursday, April 9, 2026 saying there has been some discussion about his presence at the NRM Leaders Retreat and goes ahead to explain the circumstances surrounding his invitation.
“I was invited as Minister and Leader of DP Secretariat 1. As the letter below shows, I’m a guest of the National Chairman of the NRM,” says Mao.

In reference to a letter dated 27th March, 2026 written by the NRM Secretary General, Hon. Richard Todwong inviting him, Mao explains that the invitation was on the instructions of President Museveni, also National Chairman of the ruling NRM Party.
“I am pleased to inform you that His Excellency the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement has directed that you be invited to attend the NRM Leaders retreat,” reads Todwong’s letter addressed to Mao.
This rests speculation among NRM Cadres who questioned Nobert Mao’s presence at the retreat and yet he is a leader of an opposition party.
Mao’s presence is even more speculative considering that he is gunning for the office of Speaker of 12th Parliament against the incumbent, NRM’s Rt. Hon. Anita Among who according to sources had already been cleared by CEC to run for second term.
