NAMISINDWA
Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has destroyed crops belonging to about 2,000 residents in Namisindwa District.
The destruction that took place on Wednesday, 15th April, 2026 covered areas of Kimwanga and Bukomi villages, in Kabole Parish, Bukokho Sub County.
According to Simon Wefunya, one of the residents, the crops which were destroyed were bananas, coffee, onions, beans and Irish potatoes.
Another affected resident, Sam Kutosi fears hunger looms as their crops were destroyed, urging the government to intervene and expedite boundary gazetting to resolve the UWA-park resident conflict.
Bukokho Sub County LC3 Chairperson, John Wafula criticizes UWA for destroying crops without consulting local leaders, suggesting dialogue could resolve issues amicably.
UWA Communication Officer, Rashid Hangi admits crops were destroyed, but says it was because people crossed into the Mt. Elgon National Park, encroaching on gazetted land.
He claims warnings were ignored, and those affected had been warned before action was taken.
Hangi states that UWA won’t apologize for protecting the Park, emphasizing that farming in the Park is illegal.
