MBALE CITY
Mbale city has launched an investigation into a collapsed 4-storey building under construction.
The incident occurred today Saturday, 2nd May, 2026, in early morning hours at Namakwekwe Ward, Northern City Division in Mbale City, killing an estimated eight people and leaving two others seriously injured.
Khariate Nandudu, a resident, says the building collapsed on Saturday morning while people were sleeping.
“We just heard a loud noise and discovered the whole building was down,” she said.
Sam Kizangi, another resident, suspects over 10 workers staying at the site may have been killed.
Mbale City Deputy Town Clerk, Hasoho Jolly when contacted on phone says she is awaiting a report from the city engineer to determine if the building had approved plans or not.
Hasoho told our reporter that if she gets a full report she will inform the media.
Jolly urges people to seek City Engineer Approval and supervision before constructing buildings to prevent such incidents.
Efforts to reach Elgon region police spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika were unsuccessful.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with graders digging to remove stones and debris to locate those buried under. The cause of the building collapse has not yet been identified.
