Police in Kapchorwa have launched investigations into alleged rampant theft of water meters, taps, and other accessories that occurred between January and May 2026 in Kapchorwa Municipality.
According to reports from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Kapchorwa Branch, over 150 water meters, taps, and tap stands valued at about Shs 21 million were vandalized and stolen by unknown individuals from NWSC customers within the municipality.
Similar complaints have been reported to Kapchorwa CPS under SD 04/11/01/2026, SD06/02/05/2026, SD32/19/05/2026, SD37/25/05/2026, SD39/26/05/2026, SD40/25/05/2026, SD42/25/05/2026, among others, for investigation.
Fredrick Chesang the Sip region police spokesperson says May 27, 2026, a combined force of police and NWSC officials led by Area Manager Cherukut Moses and headed by AIP Tumusime Bashir, acting on intelligence, conducted searches in Kaptere Cell and London Bridge, Kawowo Ward, Central Division, Kapchorwa Municipality.
He says they recovered a total of 29 water meters, 24 water taps, six broken padlocks, one tricycle, and one meter box from a store belonging to Mwambu Derick. The water meters had already been burnt into scrap in both stores. Other suspected stolen items recovered included used saucepans, 30 saucepan lids, six jerrycans, eight axes, two plastic chairs, four weighing scales, and two hand hoes.
Chesang adds that one suspect, Masakala Brian, was arrested to aid investigation adding that the two owners of the stores, whose names have been withheld for investigative purposes, remain at large. Inquiries are ongoing to arrest the suspects and their associates for prosecution.
Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons within their communities to the police or other authorities for immediate action. Police remain committed to protecting public property and lives.
