Tororo Municipal Council has launched construction of a medical waste incinerator at Chaminula Health Centre III in Western Division, a move officials say will close a critical gap in safe disposal of biohazardous waste.
The UGX 19.9 million facility will be built by Jackovan Agro-Systems (U) Ltd within two weeks. Works kicked off on Friday, 5th June, 2026 with a groundbreaking ceremony at the facility.
Municipal Engineer, Francis Okema urged the contractor to prioritize quality and stick to the approved scope of works.
“We expect quality works that will reflect value for money. Stick to the scope of works because we will not receive a tampered project,” Okema said.
Tororo Municipal Council Acting Principal Medical Officer, Dr. Andrew Opete, said the incinerator will help the health centre manage medical waste safely and prevent community exposure.
“This incinerator is to support the facility in managing generated medical waste and proper disposal to prevent spillovers to the community,” Dr. Opete said.
Unlike standard waste disposal, medical waste incinerators use high-temperature combustion to destroy biohazardous, pathological, and other regulated medical waste.
The controlled burning reduces waste to ash, gases, and heat, effectively eliminating pathogens, sharps hazards, and toxic materials.
Engineer Moses Fudiembe of Jackovan Agro-Systems pledged timely delivery and quality workmanship.
“We promise the people of Tororo Municipality timely and quality works,” Fudiembe said.
Health workers and residents in Western Division have welcomed the project, saying it will reduce risks of needle-stick injuries, infections, and environmental contamination from medical waste.
Construction is expected to be completed within the two-week timeline, after which the facility will begin operations at Chaminula HC III.
