25 pupils of Buwanda Primary School in Nawampiti, Luuka District, have been hospitalized at Kiyunga Health Center IV after allegedly eating white ants that had been contaminated with poison on Thursday 6th August 2026.
Luuka RDC, Michael Kibwika said one of the pupils brought the white ants to school and shared them with classmates before disappearing from the school.
After a while, the affected pupils started complaining of stomachache and were immediately rushed to Kiyunga Health Center IV.
The headteacher of Buwanda primary school, Olupot Moses said the affected pupils were receiving treatment as investigations into the matter continue.
Luuka District Chairperson, Kafuko Peter Mulyandawo asked parents to caution their children to avoid eating whatever they come across and always monitor the package being carried by their children to school.
The incident has raised concern among parents and local leaders about food safety and the supervision of pupils at school, particularly regarding food brought onto school premises and shared among learners.
Police have launched investigations into the incident and called for calm among parents.
