Bwayo meets UWA regional leadership over the consistent harassment of civilians neighboring the Mt Elgon National Park

A 17-year-old Senior Four student, Janet Nakawoya, is admitted at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital after she was allegedly beaten by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) officials in an incident that has raised fresh concerns about the treatment of communities living near protected areas.

Nakawoya is reported to have been collecting matooke from banana plants that had allegedly been cut down by UWA officials when the incident occurred last week.

Speaking to this publication today, Monday, September 21, 2026, Bwayo says the girl is currently awaiting scan results at the hospital as medical workers assess the extent of her injuries. UWA destroyed crops like coffee, onion and banana plantations in the sub counties of Mukoto, Bukokho, Bupoto and Tsekululu

Following the incident, Chairman Namisindwa, Emma Bwayo, who had just returned from international duty, met with UWA leadership to raise concerns over alleged cases of torture and beatings involving residents in Mukoto and Bukokho, areas located near the park.

The Chairman also visited Nakawoya at the hospital to assess her condition and follow up on the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.

The concerns come amid ongoing tensions between conservation authorities and communities living near protected areas, with residents raising questions about how enforcement operations are conducted.

Chairman Namisindwa called for the concerns of affected communities to be addressed while ensuring that conservation efforts are balanced with respect for the rights and safety of residents.

Matanda Geoffrey the UWA Admin says they have received the concerns and pledged to get interested, he says the team are fully committed towards building a lasting coexistence pack. He says they will treat the girl.
