Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has ordered the release of retired Brig Gen Charles Bakahumura, a former head of Uganda’s Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
Muhoozi announced the decision on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in a post on X, saying he wanted to restore relations with the former intelligence chief.
“I have decided to release General Bakahumura from detention today. We shall repair the relations that were broken in the past,” Muhoozi wrote.
Bakahumura’s release comes nearly two months after his arrest alongside another former CMI chief, retired Maj Gen Abel Kandiho, following their retirement from active military service.
The two were among 19 generals formally retired on August 20, 2026, at a ceremony held at State House Entebbe.
Their arrests were linked to investigations into alleged treachery and the production of false intelligence reports, in a wider probe involving several military officers.
Bakahumura headed CMI from 2012 to 2017 before serving as Chief of Logistics and Engineering for approximately seven years. He later served as Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Turkey.
Muhoozi’s announcement follows a similar decision involving former Defence Intelligence and Security chief Maj Gen James Birungi, whose release he had also ordered recently.
The CDF did not provide further details about the arrangements for Bakahumura’s release.
